Learn about the many wonderful benefits of Pilates and the highly respected Body Control PilatesĀ® Method.
Regularly practising Pilates enables you to improve posture, balance and core control by targeting the deep layers of muscles that are so often overlooked by other forms of exercise. It is a fantastic way to feel lengthened, toned and more flexible.
If you have a sedentary job or spend hours driving or commuting on a train, or even if you sit while you exercise (cyclists and gym-goers?), Pilates is the perfect way to realign and lengthen your body, compensating for hours spent shaped like a chair!!
Pilates is also a wonderful compliment to your yoga practise, swimming, running, cycling, dancing, gardening and many other day-to-day activities. It is a great way to rebalance and strengthen your body to reduce the likelihood of injuries and it teaches you high-quality movement to help you get the most out of your hobbies and the most out of your life.
Pilates can also help us de-stress, relax and completely switch off while we focus on healthy movement and freedom in our joints.
Pilates is based on a thorough understanding of how the skeletal & muscular framework of our bodies works. It exercises our muscles and joints without overloading or stretching them beyond their intended range of motion, it helps to create a mind-body connection, improving co-ordination and realigns the body improving mobility and balance and reducing aches and pains.
Over time and with persistence, Pilates builds strength from the inside out and helps to improve inefficient movement patterns. It is these inefficiencies in our movement and postural “bad habits” that are can be the cause of our aches, pains and often the reasons our joints wear out too early!
This focus on balancing our bodies by making sure that all our bones, joints and muscles work in collaboration with each other rather than against each other helps to build a body that not only moves well and moves with ease but one that is built for longevity.

The Body Control Pilates® Method
Body Control Pilates is widely seen as a benchmark for safe and effective teaching of the highest quality. All Body Control Pilates teachers adhere to a Code of Practice (including keeping all class sizes to a maximum of 12) , hold valid insurance, CPR certification and undergo continuous training to keep our skills and knowledge up to date.
The Body Control Pilates method is based on the work of Joseph Pilates (1880-1967) who devised a body of exercises that developed strength without bulk and balanced strength with flexibility. Many of the original exercises are considered to be too advanced for the average body and so have been adapted to be safe and effective for people of all ages and abilities. This modern approach to Pilates is therefore extremely adaptable to an individual's particular needs, injuries, or training or recovery goals.
The Body Control Pilates approach is holistic, medically-approved and follows 8 main principles: Concentration, Alignment, Breathing, Relaxation, Centring (Core Stability), Co-ordination, Flowing Movement and Stamina.
