Benefits of Pilates
Regularly practising Pilates enables you to improve posture, balance and core stability by targeting the deep layers of muscles that are so often overlooked by other forms of exercise. It is a fantastic way to feel lengthened, toned and more flexible.
If you have a sedentary job or spend hours driving or commuting on a train, Pilates is the perfect way to realign and lengthen your body, compensating for hours sitting slouched in front of our screens or in our cars. Pilates can also help us de-stress, relax and completely switch off while we focus on healthy movement and freedom in our joints.
Pilates is also a wonderful compliment to your yoga practise, swimming, running, cycling, dancing, gardening and many other day-to-day activities. It is a great way to rebalance and strengthen your body to reduce the likelihood of injuries and teaches you high-quality movement to help you get the most benefit from your hobbies.
Pilates is based on a thorough understanding of how the skeletal and muscular framework of our bodies works and provides exercises that ensure the correct muscles work in the correct way. It exercises our joints without overloading them or stretching them beyond their intended range.
Over time and with persistence, Pilates builds strength from the inside out and helps to correct faulty movement patterns. It is these faulty movement patterns and postural “bad habits” that are so often the cause of our aches, pains and the reasons our joints wear out too early!
This focus on balancing our bodies by making sure that all our bones, joints and muscles work in collaboration with each other rather than against each other helps to build a body that not only moves well and moves with ease but one that is built for longevity.

"I enjoy the way you plan each class, that you demonstrate the exercise, and that you make sure we are in the right position. I have been doing Pilates for 7 years and I am still learning, from you, how to position myself correctly. I appreciate the fact that you are aware of each individual's difficulties and will offer alternate exercises."

The Body Control Pilates® method
Body Control Pilates is widely seen as a benchmark for safe and effective teaching of the highest quality. All Body Control Pilates teachers adhere to a Code of Practice (including keeping all class sizes to a maximum of 12) , hold valid insurance, CPR certification and undergo continuous training to keep our skills and knowledge up to date.
The Body Control Pilates method is based on the work of Joseph Pilates (1880-1967) who devised a body of exercises that developed strength without bulk and balanced strength with flexibility. Many of the original exercises are considered to be too advanced for the average body and so have been adapted to be safe and effective for people of all ages and abilities. This modern approach to Pilates is therefore extremely adaptable to an individual's particular needs, injuries, or training or recovery goals.
The Body Control Pilates approach is holistic, medically-approved and follows 8 main principles: Concentration, Alignment, Breathing, Relaxation, Centring (Core Stability), Co-ordination, Flowing Movement and Stamina.
